Pediatric Eye Care

Clear vision is crucial for effective learning in school and overall development. Vision also plays a vital role in social interactions. Fortunately, the majority of children do not experience vision issues. However, some children may have vision concerns that go unnoticed or the child is unaware of what clear vision may look like. For those who do experience vision changes, timely identification and treatment can prevent the advancement of certain conditions. Consider arranging a pediatric eye exam with us today.

Vision Exams for Young Children

Vision testing, commonly performed by pediatricians and in school vision screenings, are valuable first steps to help identify vision problems in many children. However, they do not substitute for a comprehensive eye exam performed by an eye doctor. Common things to look for to help identify if your child might have vision concerns:

- Squinting, moving closer to distance targets, holding things really close to their eye

- Excessive eye rubbing

- Headaches, eyestrain, and/or eye fatigue

- Eye turning inward or outward

- Trouble reading

Many eye diseases have a hereditary component, so children whose families have a history of vision issues may need more frequent exams.

Vision Exams for School-Age Children

Eye conditions can interfere with the child’s ability to learn and progress in school. As children grow, additional warning signs of vision problems that are related to school and higher-level activities may appear. For example, signs of potential vision challenges include:

- Reluctance to complete or dislike homework

- Giving limited efforts or rushing through homework assignments

- Challenges in reading, learning, or paying attention

- Closing one eye or tilting the head to the side when reading

These behaviors can result for from reasons other than vision challenges. However, school-age children displaying these signs may benefit from a vision exam to rule out the possibility of poor vision. Alternatively, you could ask your child if they are having blurry vision or having trouble reading.
